Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.
What do you want the students to learn?
- 7.17A – Students will identify and illustrate how the tilt of the Earth on its axis as it rotates and revolves around the Sun causes changes in seasons and the length of a day.
Set-up
- On the 21st (or as close to as possible) at local noon time provide students with meter stick or dowel, protractor, camera, and GPS.
What steps will the students take?
- Students will place stick on ground, point to the sun. Be sure to instruct not to stare into sun.
- Students will manipulate stick until there is no shadow of stick showing.
- GPS of location.
- Measure angle of stick to ground, take picture.
- Repeat and record monthly (GPS and angles) throughout school year.
Extra Activities?
- Repeat at several locations (GPS locations) to show it is the angle of the sun, not location of data gathering position.
- Line up pictures, first to last, to see angle changes.
