Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.

What do you want the students to learn?

  • To distinguish between scalar and vector quantities.
  • To distinguish between displacement and distance.
  • To distinguish between velocity and speed.

Set-up

  • Get runner to carry GPS during morning run.
  • Upload data for distance, time, and speed.
  • Overlap trail from GPS unit with Google Map for greenbelt trails.

What steps will the students take?

  • Students will use data collected and projected to calculate displacement and velocity and compare to speed and distance.
  • Compare and contrast scalar vs. vector.
