Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.
What do you want the students to learn?
- Use technology for location, height, coordinates, and satellites that indicate point; compare GPS to compasses vector
- Vector Analysis – form diagram showing magnitude and direction for specific locations given to individual groups.
- Practical use of a GPS for later application.
Set-up
- Groups are given plastic bags with a series of cards giving directions and distances. Also, lengths of string (8 meters) will be used to Treasure Hunt a specific location.
What steps will the students take?
- Pick a starting point and then measure off 10 displacement points stretching string for vectors.
- Use GPS for recording specific coordinates, height, time, and number of satellites that reinforce each point.
- Draw a vector diagram specific for magnitude and direction using the above data.
