Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.
What do you want the students to learn?
- Students will learn that length of daylight hours is determined by position of Earth and the season.
Set-up
- GPS
- Computer with Google Earth
- Graph paper
- Colored pencils
- List of city coordinates (predetermined by teacher to ensure spaced out over globe)
What steps will the students take?
- Students will find names of cities on Google Earth from coordinates given to them by teacher.
- Students will look up each city in the GPS to find the sunrise and sunset on the first day of each season.
- Students will make a bar graph of the number of daylight hours and minutes for each city for each season.
Extra Activities?
- Connect with another city (via email) that is in a very different part of the earth and share information about how daylight hour differences through the year affect their lives, activities, and the nature around them.
