GPS, clipboards, overhead picture of school

Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.

What do you want the students to learn?

  • TEKS:  8.1A, 8.4A, 8.2E

Set-up

  • Acquire overhead picture of school from Google Earth.
  • Pick 3-5 points around school (i.e., flag pole, goal post).
  • Get GPS systems.
  • Clipboards with paper.

What steps will the students take?

  • Students mark first point.
  • Mark other points in order.
  • Use distance and direction from GPS to place points on Google Earth picture using correct scale.

Extra Activities?

  • Have students create entire map and not use Google map.
  • Have student draw maps on computer software.
