Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.
What do you want the students to learn?
- Students will learn that the phases of the moon are a regular repeating pattern and that even if the moon cannot be observed, it is still there and going through the cycle.
Set-up
- Students will fill in moon phase chart starting with day instruction begins.
- GPS.
What steps will the students take?
- Students will use the GPS daily to determine the moonrise and moonset to find optimal viewing time.
- Students will observe and record moon phase each night for 4 weeks.
- Students will compare observation with GPS daily information.
- Students will label each moon phase appropriately, i.e., “first quarter.”
- Students will determine if they detect a pattern.
- Students will communicate results and explore similarities and differences in information with class.
