Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.
What do you want the students to learn?
- Students will learn about the use of GPS systems while discovering patterns in nature.
Set-up
- Start student teams at different markers.
- Show them how to start the GPS systems and trip odometer, etc.
- Give out 6 or 8 macro pictures of various organisms around campus.
- Instruct students how to use the navigation system.
What steps will the students take?
- Students will be given macro pictures and a direction to travel with instructions to stop when they think they have found the organism that matches the up-close pattern they see on the macro picture.
- Student use their loupes or hand lenses to identify the correct organism, then create and label a waypoint for each organism they locate.
- Students will take a picture with their digital camera.
- Students will continue until all organisms have been marked.
- After the hunt for the organisms, students will return to the classroom and learn about the other features, such as the route, odometer, etc., features.
Extra Activities?
- Research the organisms the patterns belong to and find other organisms with that same pattern.
