Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.
What do you want the students to learn?
- Radio waves are a segment of the electromagnetic spectrum (specific wavelength and frequency).
- GPS devices are a cutting edge use of radio waves used in many industrial applications.
- Radio waves reflect off objects which affects how well they are received.
Set-up
- Day 1 – Students go to computer lab and research size (A) and frequency of radio waves, how used in many devices, and how used in GPS. (Also how GPS is used today!)
- Day 2 – Go into field.
What steps will the students take?
- Day 2 – Students will use GPS on “scavenger hunt” in and around school, plotting locations.
- They will observe the difficulty picking up satellites in various locations.
- They will become familiar with technology and its limitations.
