Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.
What do you want the students to learn?
- Students will identify examples of simple machines and examine the frequency at which they are used. (7.6A)
- Students will also use tools to collect and analyze information. (7.4A)
Set-up
- Prepare tally sheets.
- Batteries for camera and GPS.
- Memory cards for camera.
What steps will the students take?
- Class divides into six teams. Each team will have one GPS, one camera, one simple machine foldable (for reference) and one tally sheet.
- Each group is assigned one simple machine. Students will be given 40 minutes to find as many examples of their assigned simple machine as possible.
- Record GPS location.
- Create a mark.
- Take a picture.
- Record tally marks for the number of machines.
- Students compile data as a class.
- Identify the machine that is used the most frequently within a given area.
Extra Activities?
- Create a PPT presentation using pictures taken with digital camera.
- Create an Excel spreadsheet/graph with frequencies of each machine.
- Identify patterns of machine locations/clustering.
