Activity Description: Describe in as much detail as possible.

What do you want the students to learn?

  • Literature:       Appreciate different types of literature.

                                  Recognize Genre.

  • Science:          Collect and analyze information using book (3.4a).

Collect information; observe and measure (3.2b).

Analyze and interpret information to construct explanations from direct and indirect evidence (3.2c).

Set-up

  • Read “Treasure Island” to the class.
  • Prepare two different treasure maps using 15 GPS coordinates of the playground. Each map will take a different route.
  • Hide treasure.

* Description of landmarks should be clear, but do not specifically name the landmark. For example: a place where butterflies stop to rest – butterfly garden.

What steps will the students take?

  • Students will listen to the story.
  • Students will form two groups.
  • Working as a group, the student will identify each of the points, take a picture of the landmark, and continue to find the Treasure.

Extra Activities?

  • Students can create their own map for another class.
  • Clues could be based on identifying things from science lessons, i.e., habitat for crayfish; system of play and exercise equipment, etc.
